When Speed and Sunlight Decide the System
Polyaspartic coatings are a newer family of floor resins that we use across Jacksonville when a floor sees daylight or has to return to service fast. Chemically, polyaspartic is a type of polyurea. It goes on thinner than epoxy, cures much faster and stands up to ultraviolet light far better. We use it as a full system from primer to top, or as the clear final layer on top of an epoxy or flake base.
Polyaspartic next to epoxy
HomeGuide's side-by-side sums it up well. On sunlight, polyaspartic earns an excellent score there and regular epoxy a poor to fair one. Its numbers give polyaspartic a full cure of 1 to 2 days and heavy vehicles at 24 to 48 hours, where an epoxy cure may stretch to a week. Bob Vila's timing is close: for polyaspartic, foot traffic after 3 to 4 hours and cars after 24 hours; for epoxy, roughly 12 hours before walking and 3 days before parking. Polyaspartic goes on at 2 to 6 mils per coat; epoxy builds 10 to 20 mils. That thickness gap is why many systems combine the two.
Why it fits Northeast Florida
Jacksonville's mean July high is about 92 degrees, and garage doors here stay open for hours on summer afternoons. A clear epoxy topcoat in that light can amber and chalk. Polyaspartic keeps its color. Fast curing also helps in a humid climate: the shorter the time a coat spends soft and tacky, the less chance for dust, insects or condensation to mark it. For lanais, screened porches and pool areas that cannot be closed off for days, a one-day or two-day turnaround is often the deciding factor.
The tradeoff: a short working window
The same speed makes polyaspartic harder to install. It can set in the bucket and on the floor within minutes on a hot day, so it is mixed in small batches and rolled by a crew that keeps moving. Bob Vila notes polyaspartic is not meant for DIY, and we agree. It also cures faster in heat and humidity, so on summer days we often start early, work in sections, and watch the dew point against the slab temperature before each coat.
Prep and moisture still rule
A fast coating does not fix a weak bond. Polyaspartic needs the same diamond grinding, crack repair and moisture testing as any other system. Where a slab shows high moisture, we lay down a moisture-tolerant primer first. Older Jacksonville slabs often carry paint or sealer that has to come off, and newer ones often have a builder's sealer. Both are ground away before the first coat.
Where we recommend it
- West-facing garages, or any garage left open through the afternoon
- Lanais, porches and outdoor kitchens
- Pool decks and patios, with texture added
- Shops and offices that can spare only a day or two of downtime
- Topcoats over flake and metallic epoxy floors that get sun
Polyaspartic Systems We Install
Polyaspartic floor coating can be the whole floor or just the top layer.
Full polyaspartic system
Every layer, from primer through clear, is polyaspartic, so the floor is back in use soonest.
Polyaspartic over flake
A flake broadcast base sealed with a clear polyaspartic top.
Topcoat over epoxy
A thick epoxy base for build, finished with a UV-stable polyaspartic layer.
Anti-slip texture
Aggregate added to the topcoat for wet garages, lanais and pool areas.
Moisture-tolerant primer
A primer for slabs with higher vapor readings, used before the polyaspartic coats.

Published national figures, shown so you can compare. Sources differ, and the prep, the repairs and which system you pick all move the total. Once we have seen the floor, your written estimate is the price.
How a Polyaspartic Job Runs
1. Test and plan
We take a moisture reading, check sun exposure and agree how long the space can be out of use.
2. Grind and repair
Full diamond grind, crack and joint fills, vacuum.
3. Prime
A standard or moisture-tolerant primer, chosen from the reading.
4. Color, flake and top
Coats mixed in small batches and rolled in sections, each after a dew point check.
5. Return to use
Typically walkable that day, with cars allowed after a day or two, confirmed for your product.

Why Choose Us for Polyaspartic Coatings
Small batches, steady crews
We mix to the working time, so coats go on evenly instead of setting too soon.
Weather-aware scheduling
Hot or humid days get early starts and sectioned work.
The same prep as any system
Fast resin still goes on ground, repaired and tested concrete.
Polyaspartic Coatings Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
It is better for sunlight and speed, according to HomeGuide's UV ratings and cure times. Epoxy goes on thicker with each coat and is slightly cheaper per square foot. A lot of floors combine them, with epoxy underneath for thickness and polyaspartic on top for UV.
What lifespan should I expect from polyaspartic?
HomeGuide gives polyaspartic a lifespan of 10 to 20 years or more. Prep, slab moisture and the amount of wear the floor takes make the biggest difference.
Can I install polyaspartic myself?
It is not a good DIY product. Bob Vila notes it is not for DIY because it sets so quickly, and on a hot Jacksonville day the working time gets even shorter.
Does a business have to close for a polyaspartic floor?
Usually only briefly. Bob Vila notes a business may need to shut for just a day or two. We can also coat one zone at a time so the rest stays open.
